Materials
3.5 oz, 240 yds DK self-striping yarn (James C. Brett “Marble” shown)
Crochet hook size F (5 – 3.75mm) Yarn needle
Finished Size:
14” (35.5 cm) wide
7.5” (19 cm) tall without handles
Pattern
Note: The purse is worked from the top down in the round. Ch 100, join with a slip st to form ring, being careful not to twist ch.
Rnd 1 Sc in each ch around. Do not join rnds from now on; use a small scrap of yarn to mark beginning of round as you go. (100 sc)
Rnds 2-3 Sc in back loop only of each st around.
Rnd 4 Ch 3, work one dc in the previous st (this creates the first crossed dc). Continuing forward, Ch 2,*skip the next 2 sc of rnd 3, dc in the next st, dc in the 2nd skipped st. Ch2 *repeat from * to * around.
Rnd 5 Sc around working one sc in each st and 2 sc in each space. (100 sc) Rnd 6 Sc in back loop only of each st around.
Rnd 7 *Sc in back loop only of next st, ch 1*
Rnd 8 Sc in back loop only of each sc around (skipping the ch 1)
Rnd 9 *Sc in back loop only next st, ch 3*
Rnd 10 Sc in back loop only of each sc around (skipping the ch 3)
Rnd 11 Sc in back loop only of each st around
Rnd 12 Dc in back loop only of each st around
Rnds 13-16 *Fpdc 5, sc 5* repeat from * to * around
Rnd 17 In this round you will be making the cable twist. * Fpdc, skip one st, fpdc 2, fpdc around skipped st, fpdc. Sc 5* Repeat from * to * around.
Rnd 18 *Fpdc 5, sc 5* repeat from * to * around
Rnd 19 Repeat Rnd 17
Rnds 20-22 *Fpdc 5, sc 5* repeat from * to * around Rnd 23 *Fpdc 5, dc 5* repeat from * to * around Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Handle
*Ch 2, sc in 1st ch just made*. Repeat from * to * until handle measures 40” (101 cm) or desired length. Looking at handle, notice that there are strands of yarn that run diagonal on the flat part. These are the strands into which you will work the following: * Ch 2, sc in first ch, sc into next diagonal strand. * Repeat from * to * across handle. Fasten off and whipstitch into place on either side of purse opening.
Create a drawstring by chaining to desired length, or use a length of ribbon or whatever else you would like. Be creative!
