Gauge 18 stitches x 12 rows in gauge swatch stitch = 4″Gauge swatch
Row 1: Work 20 foundation dc, turn.
Rows 2-16: Ch 2 (skip first st, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st, rep from * across, hdc in last st, turn.
At the end of Row 16, fasten off Allow swatch to rest overnight before measuring.
Special Stitch
Foundation Double Crochet (foundation dc)
Step 1 – Beginning foundation dc: Ch 4, yo, insert hook in 4th ch from hook, yo and pull through, ch 1 (the base ch), (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times. (This step counts as 2 foundation dc –the ch-4 at the beginning counts as one, and the rest of the step counts as another. Step 2 (the rest of the foundation dcs): yo, insert hook in the base ch from the previous foundation dc, yo and pull through, ch 1 (another base ch made), (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times.
Repeat Step 2 for each of the following foundation dcs.
Row 1: Work 123 (139, 155, 179, 203) foundation dc, turn.
Row 2: (RS) Ch 2, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st, rep from * across to last 2 sts, fpdc in next st, hdc in last st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, *bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, rep from * across to last 2 sts, bpdc in next st, hdc in last st, turn.
Rows 4-5: Repeat Rows 2-3.
Row 6: Ch 2, *fpdc in next st, hdc in next st, rep from * across, turn.

Rows 26-39: Repeat Rows 24-25.
Rows 40-49: Work evenly as established, no longer decreasing number of sts.
Fasten off at end of Row 49.
Begin shaping back
Return to unworked sts of Row 21 with RS facing, sk 5 (7, 6, 7, 9) hdc, sl st to join in following hdc.
Row 22: Ch 3 (counts as 1st hdc and ch 1), [hdc in next st, ch 1] 30 (34, 38, 40, 40) times, hdc in next hdc, turn (leave remaining sts of Row 21 unworked).
Rows 23-43: Ch 3 (counts as 1st hdc and ch 1), *[hdc in next st, ch 1] repeat from * across to end, hdc in next hdc, turn. For sizes S, M, & L: Fasten off at end of Row 43.
For sizes XL, & 2X:
Rows 44-47: continue in pattern as established. At end of Row 47, fasten off.
Begin shaping left side
Return to unworked sts of Row 21 with RS facing.
Row 22: Sk 5 (7, 6, 7, 9) hdc, sl st in next hdc, ch 3 (counts as 1st hdc and ch 1), *[hdc in next st, ch 1] repeat from *to last 3 sts, hdc in next st, fpdc in next st, hdc in next st, turn.
