Free crochet pattern: Autowipens

Nothing will clean your awesome auto like a big rag made from 100-percent cotton. These three rags in ascending sizes have stitch combos that create the perfect texture to give your ride a shiny gloss your friends will envy.

Three designs in three different sizes: Small Rag: 14”/35.5cm square Medium Rag: 15”/38cm square Large Rag: 16”/40.5cm square

You Will Need

• For small rag: 188yd/172m of lightweight yarn, cotton
• For medium rag: 188yd/172m of lightweight yarn, cotton
• For large rag: 314yd/288m of lightweight yarn, cotton

Shown in: 

Nashua Handknits Ecologie Cotton, 100% natural dyed pima cotton, 1 3/4oz/50g = 110yd/101m per ball

Small Rag: 2 balls, Chestnut (#80)
Medium Rag: 2 balls, Indigo (#85)
Large Rag: 3 balls, Logwood (#86)

Hook: 5.00mm (size H-8 U.S.) (or size to obtain gauge)

Yarn needle
Cool car (optional)

Stitches Used

Chain stitch (ch) Double crochet (dc) Single crochet (sc) Slip stitch (sl st)

Special Stitches

Crossed double crochet (X-st): Sk 1 st, dc in next st, dc in last skipped st. Piggyback double crochet (pbdc): Dc in st indicated, dc around the post of dc just made.

Front post treble crochet (FPtr): Yo (twice), insert hook from front to back to front again around the post of next designated st, yo, draw yarn though st, (yo, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook) 3 times, sk st behind FPtr just made.

Reverse single crochet (reverse sc): Working from left to right, insert hook from front to back through next st to the right, yo, draw yarn though st, yo, draw yarn through 2 lps on hook.

Gauge

16 sts x 7 rows = 4”/10cm in dc
Always take time to check your gauge.

Small Rag

Ch 58.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn-57 sc.
Row 2: Ch 3, sk first sc, *dc in next 3 sts, working behind sts just made, dc in last skipped st, sk next sc; rep from * across, dc in last st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in BL of each st across, turn.
Rows 4-31: Repeat rows 2–3. Do not fasten off.

BORDER

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, work 42 sc evenly along side edge of rag, 3 sc in corner st, sc in each foundation ch along bottom edge of rag, 3 sc in corner, 42 sc evenly along side edge of rag, 3 sc in corner st, sc in each st across top of rag, work 1 more sc in same st as beg 2 sc, sl st in first sc to join.
Rnd 2: Ch 5, 2 dc in same sc, X-st across to next corner sc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner sc, X-st across
to next corner sc; rep from * 3 times, work 1 more dc in same st as beginning, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 to join.
Rnd 3: Sl st in corner space, ch 1, *3 sc in corner ch-2 space, sc in BL of each st across to next corner; rep from * around, sl st in first sc to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Medium Rag

Ch 58.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn-57 sts.
Row 2: Ch 4, sk 1st 2 sts, *pbdc in next sc, sk next sc; rep from * across to last sc, dc in last sc, turn-27 pbdc
Row 3: ch 4, sk first 2 sts, *pbdc in next st, sk next st; rep from * across, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-4, turn
Rows 4-24 Rep row 3.
Row 25: Ch 1, sc in each st across to ch, sc in next ch-1 space, sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-4.
Do not fasten off.

BORDER

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around entire project working 3 sc in each corner st, sl st to 1st sc, do not turn
Rnd 2: Ch 1, working from left to right, sk 1st sc, *reverse sc in next sc, sk next sc; rep from * around, sl st in first reverse sc to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Large Rag

Ch 62.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, turn-60 dc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, *FPtr around the post of next corresponding dc 2 rows below, sk st behind FPtr just made**, dc in next st on current row; rep from * across, ending last rep at **, hdc in last sc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 5: Ch 2, *dc in next st**, FPtr around the post of next corresponding dc 2 rows below, sk st behind FPtr just made; rep from * across, ending last rep at **, hdc in last sc, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 7-42: Repeat rows 3-6.
Do not fasten off.

BORDER

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around entire project working 3 sc in each corner st, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
