Maritime Overlay

Special Instructions: This overlay square is made in three layers. Make one each of Layer 2 and Layer 3 in contrasting colors and be sure to weave in the ends before moving on. Then work Layer 1 (the background) which joins them all together.

Layer Two: With CA, ch5, slip st to first ch to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch1, (sc in loop; ch3) 8 times. Slip st to beginning sc. (8 ch3 spaces)

Rnd 2: Slip st into ch3 space; Ch4; (tr, ch3 sc in top of tr (picot made); ch 1, dc) in same space; ch1, *sc in next ch3 space, ch1, (dc, ch1, tr, picot, ch1, dc) in next space; ch1 * Repeat from * to * 3 times. Ch1, slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch4.

Rnd 3: Ch1, sc in same st. *Ch5, dc in next picot, ch 10, dc in same picot, ch5, sc in next dc, ch2, sc in next sc, ch2, sc in next dc* 4 times. Slip st to 1st sc.

Rnd 4: Ch1, sc in same stitch. *5 sc in next ch5 space, (5sc, ch3, 5sc) in next ch10 space; 5 sc in next ch5 space, sc in next st, (sc in next space, sc in next st) twice. * 4 times. Slip st in 1st sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Layer Three

With CB, ch5, slip st to first ch to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch1, (sc in loop, ch3) 8 times. Slip st to beginning sc. (8 ch3 spaces)

Rnd 2: Slip st into next ch3 space. Ch9, (tr in next ch3 loop, ch5) around. Slip st in 4th ch of beginning ch9.

Rnd 3: Ch1, sc in beginning st; ch5, *sc in next space; ch5 sc in next st, ch5* around. Slip st to 1st sc.

Rnd 4: (2sc, ch5, 2sc) in each loop around. Join with slip st to 1st sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Layer One – background square to which layers 2 & 3 are attached.

With CE, ch5, slip st to first ch to form ring

Rnd 1: Ch1, (sc in loop, ch5) 4 times. Slip st to 1st sc. (4 ch5 loops)

Rnd 2: (2 sc, ch5, 2 sc) in each ch5 loop around. Slip st to 1st sc. (4 loops, 16 sc)

Rnd 3: Slip st in next sc, and into corner loop. (Ch3, dc, ch2, 2dc) in same loop. Dc in each st across. *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner; dc in each st across* Repeat from * to * 3 times. Slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch3. (32 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces)

Rnd 4: Slip st in next dc, and into corner loop. Ch4 (tr, ch3, 2 tr) in same loop. *# Ch1, skip 1 st, tr in next; ch1, skip 1 st, tr in next 2 stitches, ch1, skip 1 st, tr in next st; ch1 # (2 tr, ch3, 2 tr) in corner space * Repeat from * to * 3 times. Rnd 5: Slip st in next st, and into corner. Ch1, (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in corner. Sc in each st and each space around, working (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in each corner. Slip st in first sc.

During Rnd 6 you will be attaching Layer 3 (the round layer). Be sure that both Layer 1 and Layer 3 are wrong side down. Place Layer 3 on top of Layer 1 matching up every 4th ch 5 loop of Layer 3 with the Corners of Layer 1. Pin in place if needed.

Rnd 6: Slip st in next st, and into corner. Ch1, *sc in corner space, sc through Layer 3 loop and same Layer 1 corner space, sc in corner space. Sc in each st across Layer 1. * 4 times. Slip st in beginning sc. (80 sc)

Rnd 7: Slip st in next st. (Ch3, dc, ch2, 2dc) in same st. *# (ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st, ch1, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts) 3 times. Ch1, skip next st, dc in next st, ch1, skip next st # (2 dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner * Repeat from * to * 3 times. Repeat from # to # once more. Slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch3.

Rnd 8: Slip st in next st and into corner space. Ch1, 3sc in corner; sc in each st and each space around, working 3sc in each corner space. Slip st to beginning sc. (100 sc)

Rnd 9: Slip st in next st. Ch3 (dc, ch2, 2dc) in same space. * # (Ch1, skip next st, dc in next 2 stitches, ch1, skip next st, dc in next st) 4 times. Ch1, skip next st, dc in next 2 stitches, ch1 # (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner space. * Repeat from * to * 3 times. Repeat from # to # once more. Slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch3. (72 dc)

During Rnd 10 you will be attaching Layer 3 (the four pointed layer). Be sure that Layer 3 is wrong side down. Sandwich Layer 2 between Layers 1 & 3, extending the points of the “star” out.

Rnd 10: With CC, join with a slip st into any corner of layer one. Ch1, * 3sc in corner space. Sc in each of the next 8 dc and 5 spaces. Sc through the ch3 loop on Layer 2 and the next dc of Layer 1. Sc in each of the next 9 dc and 5 spaces. * 4 times. Slip st to first sc. (124 sc)

Rnd 11: Slip st into next st. Ch3, (dc, ch2, 2dc) in same st. # * Ch1, skip next st, dc in next 2dc * twice. @ Ch1, skip next st, dc in next st; ch1, skip next st, dc in next 2 st. @ Repeat from @ to @ 4 times. Repeat * to * once. @ Ch1 (2 dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner space. Repeat @ to @ 3 more times. Slip st to third ch of beginning ch3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Rnd 12: Slip st in next st and into corner space. Ch 1, 3 sc in same space. *Sc in each st and space across, 3 sc in corner st * 3 times. Sc in each st and each space across. Slip st in beginning sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
