Dawn – a purse to crochet

Finished size:

Approximately 10” at widest point and 7.5” tall without handle

Materials:

Worsted weight cotton – approx. 2 oz each white and purple The Crochet Dude Crochet Ergo Hook, Size H-8 [5.00 mm] The Crochet Dude Stitch Markers
The Crochet Dude Bent End Yarn Needles

Two 1.25” D-shaped rings Straight pins.

Gauge:

16 sts & 8 rows = 4” X 4” in dc.

Special instructions:

dc2tog yarn over, pull up loop in next st, yo pull through two loops on hook, yo, pull up loop in following st, yo, pull through two loops on hook, yo, pull through remaining loops on hook.
sc2tog pull up loop in each of the next two sts, yo, pull through all loops on hook

FRONT AND BACK (make 2)

With white, ch 42
Row 1 (RS) Dc into 4th ch from hook and into each ch across. (40 dc)
Rows 2-8 Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, dc across to within three sts from end, dc2tog, dc in last st.

Here you will begin the shaping at the top. First make the shaping for one side of the purse as follows:
Row 9 Ch 2, turn, dc 2tog, dc in next 4 sts.
Row 10 Ch 2, turn, dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st.
Row 11 Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, dc in next 2 sts. Row 12 Ch 2, dc2tog, dc in last st.
Row 13 Ch 2, turn, dc2tog. Fasten off.

Now continue to make the shaping of the other side of the top as follows. They should be mirror images when you are finished

With right side facing and counting the unworked sts of Row 8, skip 13 sts and attach white with a slip st.

Row 9 Ch 2, dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st. Row 10 Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, dc to end.
Row 11 ch 2, turn, dc in next st, dc2tog, dc in last st. Row 12 Ch 2, turn, dc2tog, dc in last st

Row 13 Ch 2, turn, dc2tog. Fasten off.

SIDE/BOTTOM (make one)

With purple ch 16
Row 1 (RS) Sc into 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across (15 sc). Row 2 Ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only (BLO) of each st across.
Row 3 Ch 1, turn, sc in both loops of each st across.
Rows 4-18 Repeat rows 2-3.
Place stitch marker at both ends of this row.
Row 19 Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc across to within last 2 sts, sc2tog.
Row 20 Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO of each st across.
Rows 21-26 Repeat rows 19-20.
Row 27 Ch 1, turn, sc in both loops of each st across.
Row 28 Ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only (BLO) of each st across. Rows 29-36 Repeat rows 27-28.
Fasten off.

Turn piece upside down so that the base ch is on top and RS is facing you. Attach purple to first base ch with a sc and repeat Rows 1-36 to create a mirror image.

HANDLE (make one)

With purple ch 71.
Row 1 Sc into 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across.
Row 2 Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO of each st across.
Row 3 Ch 1, turn, sc in first 5 sts, fold handle lengthwise so that you can work through top of current row and the base ch. Sc in each st across to within five sts of the end. Sc in last five sts working through top of current row only. Fasten off.

CLOSURE

To make flap, with purple ch 15.

Row 1 Sc into 2nd ch from hook and into each ch across (14 sc).
Row 2 Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO of each st across.
Row 3 Ch 1, turn, sc in both loops of each st across.
Row 4 Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO of first 6 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in BLO of last 6 sts. Row 5 Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, working 2 sc in ch 2 space.
Rows 6-15 Repeat rows 2-3.
Edge flap by working one rnd of sc evenly around. Fasten off.

To make bobble, with purple ch 3 leaving a long tail.
Rnd 1 Work 8 sc in 3rd ch from hook do NOT join this rnd or any rnd of bobble.
Rnds 2-3 Sc in FLO of each st around.
Rnd 4 Sc2tog four times. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Pull ending tail through center of bobble and out the beginning rnd.

ASSEMBLY

Weave in all ends. Attach front to side/bottom as follows. Lay the side/bottom flat, WS up. Line up the center of the first row of the front with the base ch of the side/bottom. Pin into place WS together. Line up corner of front with the stitch markers on the side/ bottom and pin into place WS together. Line up the end of the side/bottom with the top of the front piece and pin into place WS together. Repeat on other side. With RS facing attach purple with a sc at beginning of the pinned seam and sc evenly around until front is attached.

Repeat to attach the back to the side/bottom.
Edge purse opening by working one Rnd of sc in purple all the way around.

Attach flat part of D rings on either side of purse opening. Fold end of handle around top of D-ring and whipstitch into place; repeat on other side of purse.

Attach bobble to center of Row 6 of front of purse. Whipstitch closure to top of Row 7 of back of purse. Weave in all remaining ends.
